An avid collector, patron, and promoter of South African Art, our client required a secure, temperature-controlled art storage container where they could safely store collections of high-priced paintings and pictures. In addition to blending in beautifully with their natural surroundings, the unit had to be movable and equipped with only the highest quality fixtures and finishes.
With sustainability top of mind, we ordered the base building block – a scraped 12 m B-grade High Cube Container. As is standard practice in preparation for all our shipping container conversions, the unit underwent a rigorous process to remove any and all debris, dust, and rust. To prevent future corrosion, red oxide was also applied.
Once prepped and proved acceptable, markings were made according to its preapproved design.
After welding a galvanized frame to the container, we installed the insulation. Since high temperatures and humidity can damage and even destroy artwork, it was of particular importance that the unit maintains optimal temperatures. This was achieved by lining the entire storage container with 40 mm polystyrene panels with white Chromadek Sheets.
The unit was also equipped with 2 energy-saving air-conditioners. Mounted externally, the condensers were secured with custom-built cages and, like the storage unit, also bedecked with Balau-cladding. To provide additional protection from the harsh outdoor elements, we also constructed and installed a sprayed awning above the access doors.
Fully electrified with ample plugs and lighting, the unit is equipped with shelving and a mounted Formica cantilever counter, providing a small, yet practical admin area. For class, comfort and easy cleaning, the floors were fitted with luxurious laminated flooring.
Prior to delivery, the unit was disassembled, placing all protruding parts inside the container. Upon its safe arrival in Stellenbosch, the unit was reassembled on-site. Ready-quipped with levelling jacks, placing and levelling the unit was a fast and hassle-free task.
