In aid of the community of Barcelona in Gugulethu, a non-profit organization approached Topshell to convert several containers into an Education Centre. The facility was made up of 3 container classrooms, a male and female ablution facility, a kitchen, and an admin office with an adjacent storage room.
The Classroom Containers: Constructed from two conjoined 6 m containers, each classroom features polyurethane flooring, insulated walls, an aluminium sliding door, and flip windows. With safety top of mind, the doors were equipped with security gates and the windows with burglar bars. All the units are electrified and equipped with basic lighting.
The Ablution Facility: We converted a single 6 m container into an ablution facility with male and female toilets, urinals, hand basins, and basic lighting. Like the container classrooms, the ablution facility also features polyurethane floors and aluminium windows with security bars.
The Kitchen Container: Also made from a single 6 m container, we ready-quipped the kitchen container with a stainless steel table, a sink unit, a large food cupboard, two gas stoves, basic lighting and plugs. The unit is compliant and has the appropriate gas COC. The walls were also insulated with cromedek panels.
Principal’s Office Container: A single 6 m container was converted into an insulated office with an adjoining storage room with basic plugs and lighting, insulated walls, polyurethane flooring, and an aluminium window with security bars.
We placed a roof over the containers, creating a clean, dry and safe space for the little ones to play.
To ensure sufficient water supply, we set up two water tanks. Connected to the roof, these tanks collect rainwater, which is then dispensed to the school via a pump.
